Description

Short description
The bed sheet has six triangular pieces of lace sewed in and a bobbin lace band on the upper edge. The sheets has also embroidered initials “M and T”. The sewed-in lace is called brains – a combination of continuous and non-continuous completed lace.

Original use
According to its dimensions, the sheet was intended for a double bed. The sheet was a part of the resounding exhibitions “Lace from Grandmother’s Chest”, which were placed on view in Idrija, during the time of the Lace Festivals in 1992 and 1993. In addition, the aforementioned exhibition was also in the Križanke Culture-Information Centre in Ljubljana (09/12/1993–06/01/1994).
Present use
The sheet with the bobbin lace is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is physical evidence of the centuries-old bobbin lace tradition and knowledge of bobbin lace making in Idrija. It is a part of the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition Idrija Lace, History Written in Thread, which tells the story of the handmade, Idrija bobbin lace. More similar patterns preserved in the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum can be used for other types of promotion.
