Original use
From the painted tracing paper, the lacemakers could see which techniques were intended for the lacemaking. Between 1946 and 1956 official lace sales were carried out through the Idrija Lace Cooperative and then through trade companies. The strongest demand for lace was in the summer months, although the lacemakers still made most products during the autumn and winter months. Consequently, problems occurred in supply-demand coordination. In addition to the summer time, lace supply during those years depended on the accessibility and the returning of the unused thread and on the high prices of the thread. For purchasing material, the Idrija lacemakers needed foreign currency (and not lira), which they could get by exporting lace abroad and consequently got paid in foreign currency. They could, however, exchange the foreign currency for lira, but were therefore exposed to foreign exchange risk.
Present use
The tracing paper is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is physical evidence of the centuries-old bobbin lace tradition and knowledge of bobbin lace making in Idrija. It is a part of the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition Idrija Lace, History Written in Thread, which tells the story of the handmade, Idrija bobbin lace. More similar patterns preserved in the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum can be used for other types of promotion.
