Description

Short description
The tracing paper is blue with a white pattern line. This pattern is marked with a serial no. 0511, which was subsequently written with a red pencil. It also contains the author’s signature, date of creation, dimensions 90/90 and an illegible inscription. There is an inscription in the upper left edge saying: “Mitte”, which probably means that this is a pattern for the middle of the lace - edges for a tablecloth in dimensions 90 × 90. This is an example of a pattern for a non-continuous lace made by parts with a flower motif – carnation.

Original use
From the painted tracing paper, the lacemakers could see which techniques were intended for the lacemaking. Furthermore, lacemakers still had a choice in interpreting the painted pattern (selection of a technique, adjustment to their own taste and knowledge) in materialisation of bobbin lace. Štefan Pečirer was a technical mining designer. Mining designers were highly valued. Tracing papers were drawn by them before the introduction of the drawing classes in Idrija Lacemaking School in 1903. Later on, the aforementioned school started designing patterns on their own, by their own educated personnel. Besides Pečirer, Avgust Hladnik was also a well-known mining designer.
Present use
The tracing paper is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is physical evidence of the centuries-old bobbin lace tradition and knowledge of bobbin lace making in Idrija. It is a part of the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition Idrija Lace, History Written in Thread, which tells the story of the handmade, Idrija bobbin lace. More similar patterns preserved in the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum can be used for other types of promotion.
