The skein holder is fully wooden. It is made of a vertical stand and two transverse bars, which have holes screwed in to relocate wooden pins according to the length of the skein.

Original use
A skein holder was used for winding or unwinding the skein into a ball. A skein holder was usually attached to a bench or a chair. The thread was being wound from the skein holder to the ball. Using the bobbin lace winder, the thread was being wound to the bobbin. The object was initially used by Gizela Bremec from Žiri, who was married to Idrija. Later on it was used by her daughter Marija Bremec, married Kerševan (1913–2009). Nowadays, the described object is no longer in use, since the purchased thread is already wound on a special bobbin (špulca).
Present use
The described skein holder is being preserved, secured and presented as an important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is physical evidence of the centuries-old bobbin lace tradition and knowledge of bobbin lace making in Idrija. It is a part of the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition Idrija Lace, History Written in Thread, which tells the story of the handmade, Idrija bobbin lace. More similar patterns preserved in the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum can be used for other types of promotion.

STATE OF CONSERVATION
History of conservation:
The object was restored in 2008. A new base was made, other parts of the object were conserved. Therefore, no additional interventions are necessary. Security of the premises is taken care of.
