Original use
The spinning wheel was used for winding thread on bobbins by several generations of Idrija lacemakers. The handle with the tube enabled the regulation according to the bobbin length. The wheel was used for manual propelling. The pin was connected to the tube and the wheel, which was, while winding the thread from the ball to the bobbin, propelled with the right hand. The left hand was used for regulating the thread with a piece of stronger paper, so that the thread was smoothly wounding to the bobbin. It is important that the bobbins are “tightly wound”, so that the thread unwinds smoothly and does not get stuck. The described spinning wheel was donated to the Idrija Municipal Museum by Alenka Pavšič. Originally, it was the property of the deceased Terezija Božič, married name Gantar, from Idrija (a sister of a bobbin lacemaking teacher Fani Tavčar). It was then used by the mother of the last owners Marija Vidmar.
Present use
The spinning wheel is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the lace collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. It can be used for temporary museum exhibitions or for other types of promotions. Because it is homemade, old and was used by several generations of Idrija lacemakers, it has great historical and cultural value.
