Original use
Guipures were used for decorative edges of clothing for worship, altar cloths, and other church and house textiles (e.g. towels, bedding). In the 19th century, patterns, mostly likely brought from Croatia, were mass produced in Idrija. These were called guipure, the new lace, the tiny, Croatian lace or church lace. In Slovenia, they were mostly used for decorating church textiles especially. Most of them are used on Slovenian Church Icing for textiles, especially for trimming of clerical cloaks. Regarding origin, we could find similarities with Milanese lace.
Present use
The described lace is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is physical evidence of the centuries-old bobbin lace tradition and knowledge of bobbin lace making in Idrija. It is a part of the lace collection of Idrija Municipal Museum. It can be used for temporary museum exhibitions or for other types of promotions. Guipure is no longer made nowadays. Patterns of guipure are kept by the Idrija Municipal Museum.
