Original use
The book with its synthetic form represents Idrija’s interesting and complex social and healthcare issues from the beginning of the 16th century to the First World War. At the same time, the author provides descriptions of many renowned experts, who were involved in mining healthcare and surgical services. During the time of the largest economic upswing in the 18th century, the Idrija Mercury Mine had the best organised healthcare services in Slovenia. Pfeifer also translated two fundamental works for understanding the early history of the Idrija Mercury Mine from German language, namely of Johann Jakob Ferber: Beschreibung des Quecksilber-Bergwerks zu Idria in Mittel-Krein (Berlin, 1774) and of Balthasar Hacquet: Oryctographia Carniolica oder Physikalische Erdbeschreibung des Herzogthums Krain, Istrien und zum Thiel der benachtbarten Länder (Thail II, Leipzig, 1781).
Present use
The book is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. The book was created at the time of the 500th anniversary of the Idrija Mercury Mine and the author dedicated it to the all medical workers who took care of and helped Idrija miners. It is kept in the collection of library material (in analogue and digital form) and is available for borrowing.
