Mihael Arko

Mihael Arko (born in 1857) became a priest and dean in Idrija in 1897, where he worked until his death in 1938. Soon after acquiring the position, he began to collect material for the described book. In total, he reviewed the material for 15 years. The court councillor, the head and the mining directorate enabled him to access archive mining files in the attic of the castle, where the Mine had administration offices. One of the fundamental historical works about Idrija and the Mine, it is divided into three sections. The first describes the formation and the development of the mine, the history of the mine’s management, mining judiciary, healthcare, life of the miners and their social conditions. The second section is dedicated to the church history and the presentation of Idrija church and the life of clergy. The third section describes municipal administration, education, theatre, post office, roads and well-known residents of Idrija.

The book is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is kept in the collection of library material (in analogue and digital form). The original book is not available for borrowing, however, a reproduction is.
