The author provides one of the first critical assessments of the Idrija Mercury Mine history from its discovery to the middle of the 19th century. It is evident from the book that he was referring to the mining archive, which is no longer preserved. He divided the history of the Idrija Mercury Mine into three periods: the era of entrepreneurship 1490–1580; cameral mine and improvement of production methods 1580–1747; in administrative and technical renovation under Maria Theresa’s management and into the mine’s progress with scientifically justified methods 1747–1859. As critically assessed by the later writers of the Idrija Mercury Mine history, the Hitzinger’s work also has some flaws. The author has mistakenly set the Idrija Mercury Mine nationalisation in the period from 1578 to 1580.

The book is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is kept in the collection of library material (in analogue and digital form). It is stored in the vault, since it is unique material.
