The land registry has brown leather covers. The top half if the cover has a paper with a handwritten title glued on it, saying: Idrianisches Urbarium / 1680. Subsequently, the edge of the paper had a seal K. K. BERGDIREKTION IDRIA imprinted and an imperial eagle in the middle. The spine had two main leads and a sticker with an inscription G/1 17. Urbar/ium. The leather cover also covers the edges and is designed as a folder. On the top and bottom part of the cover there are two small holes, which probably served for the locks (not preserved). The land registry has 101 numbered foliants. The text is written in German, in Gothic Cursive script. The introduction contains a list of subjects from A to Z. The list of subjects is arranged by Christian, not family names. The records discuss duties from 1674 to 1683.

Imperial Royal Mining Directorate Idrija

In the beginning of the mine operation, the Idrija area belonged to Tolmin estate. The first land registry for Idrija was created at the end of the 16th century. Due to the recognition of the meaning of rich ore deposit, the procedures for separating Idrija from the Tolmin estate were done in a quick manner. In 1607, the Mayor’s Office was joined to the mining Idrija estate, which finally separated the Idrija estate from Tolmin and therefore became directly subordinate to the Court Chamber in Vienna. Idrija estate, which existed until the general land release in 1848, comprised the settlement with the mine and Idrija parish house. It contained 14 old hides and several clearings. Among the liabilities of Idrija subjects was also offering transportation for Idrija Mercury Mine at lower rates than the rest of the farmers, which also enabled them to sell their produce to miners, which was not possible before that. Immediately after the formation of the new estate, Idrija subjects stopped paying duties and taxes to the mine manager and the landowner. After the revision of provincial commission in 1621, respecting liabilities to the land estates became more consistent. The estate was managed by every mine manager.

The land registry is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is kept in the collection of library material (in analogue and digital form). It is available for researchers and the wider interested public. It can be used for mercury heritage promotions. In the preserved land registries, the lists of Idrija subjects are published, which is a good resource for studying the demographic structure of the estate and the land registries also include the inventory of their real estates, which reveals the number of houses, gardens, clearings and huts, which serve as the source for the reconstruction of the city’s growth. The oldest land registry of Idrija estate is kept in the Archive of the Republic Slovenia (SI AS 1074/71), namely for the years between 1623 and 1694, however the land registries from the years 1680 (M-107), 1737 (M-108) and 1776 (M-109) are kept in the Idrija Municipal Museum.
