Original use
During his participation in the Museum Committee, Janko Trošt (1894‒1975), one of the initiators of museology in Idrija, also described the collection of paintings, among others. In his paintings, the author depicts the town of Idrija, the way of working and various mining machines over a longer period of time. Some paintings (Town Square) were inspired by his own visions and experience of the town. In some others, especially those related to the operation of the mine, he relied on the preserved literary works.
Present use
The described painting collection is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the art collection of Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view them within the permanent exhibition “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija”. With the exception of the paintings Town Square and the Bucket Maker, the other paintings are exhibited in one place. The paintings show charcoal burning in the forests of Idrija, ore smelting in piles at the beginning of the 16th century, miners’ work in the middle of the 17th century, Mrak water barriers (called “klažve”) on the Idrijca River from 1772, wood gathering using a timber slide, older water barriers on the Idrijca River made of wood and stone, wood flooded behind the rake in the area of the Idrija town called Lenštat, transport of mercury from Idrija to the rest of the world. Due to the content and the artist, the paintings encompassed in the collection have great historical value.
