Description

Short description
The statue has a wooden stand on which there is a sculpture of a woman, made out of plaster. She has an arm lifted in the air to pass a rifle to the Idrija miner who has returned from work. The miner has a carbide lamp attached to his belt. He carries a lunch bag over his shoulder and in his right hand still holds a drilling machine, which is positioned in the ore mass between the miner and the woman. The mining axe also lies beside him. The plaster is covered with platinum, so that it appears as if it is a bronze casting.

Original use
The statue, “Miner leaving to join the Partisans”, is a miniature version or a model of a bronze statue, which is placed in the Idrija Town Square. It was built by Tone Kralj, as an proposal for a large bronze statue, which was built in 1953, on the then Marshal Tito Square in the centre of Idrija. The miner on the statue is reminiscent of the Idrija Miner statue, built in 1933 by Nikolaj Pirnat. Slovenian painter, sculptor and graphic designer Tone Kralj (1900–1975) studied sculpture in Prague, and improved his knowledge in Vienna, Paris and Venice. In the 1930s and 1940s, he marked the Slovenian national space with paintings in over 50 churches from Mount Lussari to the Adriatic Sea. His opus, besides family portraits, encompasses historical scenes of revolts and wars, lives of peasants and workers, and Biblical scenes.
