Description
Short description
The first aid kit includes: bandages, patches, gauze, scissors, gel for burns and antiseptic (mercury-chromium). The kit is stored in a blue metal box. On the inner side of the box cover, there is an inventory with a list of box contents and the name of the manufacturer.
They began using the described first aid kit in the beginning of the 20th century in the households and in the military. Mercury-chromium / mercury organic halogenid merbromin (C20H8Br2HgNa2O6) was one of the basic accessories. It served as a disinfectant in healthcare and in the treatment of minor bruises, scratches and injuries.
Present use
The first aid kit is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the CUDHg Smelting Collection. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum display “From Ore to Mercury Drops” in the Hg Smelting Plant, which represents the characteristics and the versatile use of mercury in science, technology, medicine, culture and every day life. Within the mentioned exhibition the object is placed in the density segment of mercury compounds and it presents the usefulness of mercury for medicine purposes.
