Description
Short description
The thermometer for measuring ground temperature has a expansion scale from 0°C to 40°C and in placed into an oblong metal cylinder. The front side of the coating is modified and opened so that the temperature can be read. The bottom part of the cylinder ends with a nailed tip. The lower part has visible holes, through which the ground temperature easily passes to the reservoir with mercury. The first third of the cylinder is equipped with a flat round spacer.

Original use
The thermometer for measuring ground temperature was used for terrain measurements or was used by the farmers for determining the ground temperature during the sowing time. A part with a sharp tip is stuck into the ground all the way to the spacer and the ground temperature is read through the opening.
Present use
The thermometer for measuring ground temperature is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the CUDHg Smelting Collection. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum display “From Ore to Mercury Drops” in the Hg Smelting Plant, which represents the characteristics and the versatile use of mercury in science, technology, medicine, culture and every day life. Within the exhibition, the object is placed in the thermal expansion segment and it presents the usefulness of mercury for practical and technical purposes.
