Description

Short description
The thermometer for measuring liquids’ temperature is a one-piece round oblong pipe. The bottom part is slightly narrowed and semicircularly fused and filled with mercury. The upper part is closed with a plastic cylinder plug. The temperature scale is from a few degrees below zero to 52°C. Just below the top, there is a smaller bent pipe, filled with mercury and a temperature scape with the range up to 150°C. On the back, next to the manufacturer’s name, there is also a product specification.

Original use
The described thermometer was used as a measuring device for measuring temperature of liquids in the laboratory of the Idrija Mercury Mine. Its operation was based on the temperature expansion and contraction of mercury. Mercury expands evenly in a very wide temperature area from –38°C to +356°C. The volume of mercury increases with the increasing temperature. The expansion and contraction of the mercury volume is relatively larger in a pipe with thin cross section.
Present use
The thermometer for measuring liquid temperature is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the CUDHg Smelting Collection. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum display “From Ore to Mercury Drops” in the Hg Smelting Plant, which represents the characteristics and the versatile use of mercury in science, technology, medicine, culture and every day life. Within the exhibition, the object is placed in the thermal expansion segment and it presents the usefulness of mercury for practical and technical purposes.
