Description

Short description
The maximum thermometer is an integral part of the thermometers in the weather station. It is an oblong glass pipe, which is fused into a ball shape at the bottom and it is filled with mercury. It ends with a cylindrical plug at the top. In the middle of the thermometer, there is a capillary for mercury flow and measuring scale with the range from -30 to 50°C. On the pedestal, the thermometer is a horizontal position, however the reservoir is slightly lower than the upper part of the thermometer.

Original use
The thermometer is a measuring device for temperature determination, the operation of which is based on the temperature extension of mercury. The maximum thermometer is used as a thermometer in the weather house, which is positioned two feet above the ground. It is used to measure the maximum air temperature. After the measurement, the mercury stays in the same position, due to the narrowed passage. The person who measures the temperature returns mercury to its original position, i.e. main reservoir, by shaking the thermometer.
Present use
The maximum thermometer is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the CUDHg Smelting Collection. Visitors can view them within the permanent museum display “From Ore to Mercury Drops” in the Hg Smelting Plant, which represents the characteristics and the versatile use of mercury in science, technology, medicine, culture and every day life. Within the exhibition, the object is placed in the thermal expansion segment and it represents the usefulness of mercury for technical devices.
