Original use
A double-headed eagle was a coat-of-arms of Austro-Hungarian monarchy between 1867 and 1915, when a crown of Hungarian king Stephen was added to the coat of arms. The coat of arms also contained the coat of arms of Austro-Hungarian countries, which were placed in a clockwise direction, namely the coat-of-arms of Slovakia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, Burgundy, Carniola, Tyrol, Styria, Austria, Croatia, Bohemia (Czech), Hungary. The coat of arms was, according to the known references, made in the Idrija Mercury Mine workshop. The eagle’s tail was probably broken tail and therefore the subsequently forged on. According to the known data, every mining facility contained a coat of arms of the Owner of the Mine, which became the state’s property in 1575. The coat-of-arms was found during the excavation of holes for the fences among old ironware next to the Barbara’s Shaft. On 8/8/1969, four Idrija Mercury Mine workers (Matej Bezeljak, Slavko Velikanje, Ljubo Carl, Miroslav Lapajne) brought it to the museum.
