Original use
The crosscut saws were used for cutting down trees or sawing the logs. Sawing was performed by two people. The saws were used for setting different support structures in the Idrija Mercury Mine pit, in the accompanying mining plants and in the forests in Idrija surroundings. They could also be used privately.
Present use
The crosscut saws (three in total) are being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. They are a part of the mining and ethnological collection of the Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view two crosscut saws within the permanent museum exhibition “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija”. One of them is stored in the depot and can be used for temporal museum exhibitions. All the described saws can also be used for different types of mercury heritage promotions.
