Original use
The caliper was used for measuring the thickness of tree trunks. At the end of the 19th century, the Idrija Mercury Mine had 7,500 ha of forest land area. Therefore, they founded a special department, which employed foresters, who were responsible for forest management. They controlled the felling and reforestation of the cut areas. This was one of the first experiments of rational and spatial forest management in Slovenia. The demand for wood was constantly high. For example, in the beginning of the 20th century the Mine and Idrija town annually used approximately 30.000 m3 of wood. The caliper was probably made in the Austro-Hungarian period (very likely in Vienna) and remained in use until the First World War.
Present use
The described object is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija technical mining heritage with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the Idrija Municipal Museum collection “Mining machines and devices”. The collection displays restored mining machines and devices, tools and equipment, which were necessary for working in a pit or in outdoor plants. For this reason it represents technical heritage which greatly exceeds the Idrija Mercury Mine framework and is therefore of a larger, global importance.
