A theodolite consists of a wooden base with a triangular stand. Under the stand, there are footscrews and a horizontal circle with an angular division, which allows measurements of horizontal angles from 0° or 360°. The top part consists of a binocular with bracket and a supporting axle. This part also contains a vertical circle with an angular division, which allows measurements of vertical angles from -90° or 90° or zenith distances from 0° to 180°.

A theodolite is an optical-mechanical or electronical-optical instrument for precise measurement of horizontal and vertical angles or zenith distances. It is suitable for measuring angles at a larger distance. The mine surveyors enabled systematic construction of a complex underground system by directing and controlling the directions of the tunnels, by controlling the heights and by producing mine surveying maps. The measurements were a base for producing mine surveying maps in different scales, which were necessary for the construction of mine parts (tunnels, break-throughs, shafts, etc.). Geodetic measurements are also very important for establishing movements and deformations of the surface on the affected mining area. For measurements, it is screwed onto a tripod, which enables the installation of the theodolite above the geodetic point in horizontal position. For exact horizontal angles observation and monitoring the movements of geodetic nets, the theodolite is screwed above the concrete pillar, which is permanently placed on the terrain.

The theodolite is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija technical mining heritage with exceptional universal values. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum display Anthony's Main Road, namely on the level I/20 of the Kropáč mining field. It is a part of the presentation that represents the entire story of mining in the Idrija Mercury Mine. It also highlights the importance of a mine surveying services of the Idrija Mercury Mine. In addition to theodolite, the display also contains a wooden box, which served for theodolite transportation.
