Original use
The ohmmeter is a controlling instrument, which measures electrical resistance on the basis of the current measurements through the component at constant voltage. By measuring the electrical resistance, the irregularities in the connection of the electrical current circuit are determined, for example open circuit or short circuit. It is also used for the finding and determination of concealers. The described item is an ordinary instrument for measuring electrical resistance, which is adapted for the use in excavations, especially for methane pits. It has a small battery pack, which is connected to the electric current circuit with clamps on the ohmmeter. During excavations in the pit, the lighters with explosives, inserted in the wells in core of the mining field, are connected with the mining wire. Before the mining starts, the ohmmeter is used to check if all the lighters are correctly connected. When the current flows through the wires and the lighters, and then returns to the instrument, the indicator shows actual resistance of the connection, which is also calculated beforehand. If all the lighters are properly connected, the resistance on the ohmmeter is the same as the one we calculated and in that case we can start mining with the detonator.
Present use
The ohmmeter is being preserved, secured and presented as an important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is a part of the CUDHg mine collection. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum display Anthony's Main Road, namely within the useful warehouse of explosives on the 17th level of the Kropáč mining field. It is a part of the presentation that represents the entire story of mining in the Idrija Mercury Mine and with the related work process.
Original location
Working at the mining field of Idrija Mercury Mine.
Present location
Anthony's Main Road (level I/17 of the Kropáč mining field, useful storage of explosives), Kosovelova 3, SI-5280 Idrija.
