Short description
A “pek” is a tool resembling a pick, yet smaller and more convenient. It has a long, oval, worn handle. The front part of the handle serves for mounting. Two equally long tips are square cut and sharpened.

Original use
The “pek” – pick with sharp-pointed ends, was used for excavating and breaking the ore or tailings in the pit. There is no accurate information about when they started to use the tool in the Idrija Mercury Mine. However, the “pek” was definitely used in the pioneer period of manual excavation of mercury ore.
Present use
The described object is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija mining heritage with exceptional universal values. Visitors can view it within the permanent exhibition of the Idrija Municipal Museum “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija”. It can also be used for different types of mercury heritage promotions.

STATE OF CONSERVATION
History of conservation:
The described object was conserved before 1995, during the time of preparations for the permanent museum exhibition. Therefore, no additional interventions are necessary. Security of the premises is ensured.
