Original use
The mining hammer – “šlenger” was also called a “rajbel hammer”, because it was introduced to Idrija by the instructors from the Rajbel Mine. Such types of hammers were used for manual ore excavation. The miner held a steel drill or a tip in one hand (diagonally upwards). and would hit the tip with the hammer held in the other hand (from the bottom up). By using this technique of ore excavation, the impacts were stronger, their arms hurt less and the dust poured out of the bore on its own.
