Short description
The drive steam piston machine, of the Woolf type has two vertical cylinders, a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder. The cylinders are vertical and made with a two-part expansion and valved control units. The machine has a so-called cataract control mechanism of Kley system. For overcoming blind spots the machine has a flywheel. The machine’s power at normal load is 73.55 kW (100 HP) and at large load 147.1 kW (200 HP). The number of rotations or cycles is 1 to 12 RPM, usually 6 RPM. During operation, the consumption of dry saturated steam at 73.55 kW was 1000 kg/h. Functional pump at 1250 l/m has the capacity of 6 RPM.

Original use
After a sudden pit water penetration in 1885, the Idrija Mercury Mine Administration decided to purchase and install the Kley’s pumping device system in the Francis' Shaft. Wet steam from the nearby boiler house was used for the operation of the steam machine. The steam machine powered the working machine the pump. It served for pumping pit water from level IX (271.6 m deep) to the surface. The pistons powered the lever through connecting rods. The lever was connected to pumping bars on one side of the rotation point and through the connecting rod and a shaft with the flywheel. Water pumping was performed in three stages. The Plunger pump was installed on level XI, the Rittinger pumps were installed on main levels IX and III. The pump was last used for the purposes of the Mine in 1948, since the machine was replaced with more efficient centrifugal pumps. It was dismantled seven years later.
Present use
The described machine is a part of the Idrija Municipal Museum collection “Mining machines and devices”. The Kley’s pump is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija technical mining heritage with exceptional universal values. The opening ceremony of the restored pump was on 29th September 2009, within the “European Cultural Heritage Days” on the topic “Heritage, innovation and creativity”. The Idrija Kley’s pump is the largest preserved machine of the Idrija Mercury Mine. At the same time, it is the largest preserved steam engine in Slovenia and one of the largest ones in Europe. The pump is exhibited in front of the entrance and the drive engine in the Francis’ Shaft showroom, where it was located in the time of its operation.
Original location
The drive machine was placed in the Francis' Shaft building, the pump and the rods were in the shaft, to level XI.
Present location
The drive machine was positioned on the original location in the Francis' Shaft building, the pump was placed in front of the building, almost in the centre of the shaft.
STATE OF CONSERVATION
History of conservation:
A complete conservation-restoration procedure was implemented on the machine between 2003 and 2006. All parts were cleaned with the sandblasting process and protected with a two-component foundation paint. They dug a hole in the shaft’s building, which served for placing the lever with bearings and also tunnels, which served for the engineers and maintenance personnel to access all the lubrication spots. Then they assembled the pump on the foundations in the shaft’s building. Additional interventions are not necessary. Security of the premises is ensured.
