The miners’ blocks of flats were built in an area of Idrija town called Prejnuta. They were built into the hill and are partially underground. All the blocks have a rectangular floor plan and a double-eaved roof. It is a set of three connected blocks. In the middle, there is a two-storey building with a total of 13 apartments, which has two single-storey buildings with 5 apartments, built next to it on its left and the right side. The facades of the buildings have a simple designed. The window frames are the only decor made within the plaster. The original dimensions and roof inclines are preserved, however the distribution of facade openings is partially modified. The wooden woodsheds are still located next to the block. The aesthetically designed and functional architecture of the buildings, modelled by the workers’ district, represents the completed urban whole.

Idrija Mercury Mine

The miners’ blocks were built in several stages. A two-storey building was special, since the remains of the smelting furnace were initially still there (there was an old smelting plant originally located here). The apartments for mining families were therefore only on the first floor. Later, the ground floor was also reorganised into apartments. A decade later, two single-storey buildings were built on the right and the left side of building. Each apartment had three spaces: a kitchen, a small room, a large room and a common lobby. Two kitchens were back to back because of the common chimney, which means that they were placed in the middle of the building. The water was brought in the apartments from the “štirns”, all up to the year 1958. Behind the block, there were wooden woodsheds and a laundry. Two families shared one toilet, however they each had their own toilets from 1956 on (canalisation was installed after 1970).

The miners' blocks in the Prejnute area are being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija mining heritage with exceptional universal values. In the context of the mining activity, they are important witnesses of the life of the mining families throughout the history of the Mine and of the development of a residential culture of the working class. The blocks of flats represent a living monument to generations of Idrija miners, who co-shaped the mercury culture throughout the centuries, and today the heritage of all humanity. With the exception of some inappropriate replacements of the builders’ joinery and the distribution of facade opening, original dimensions, the roof inclines and the facade are preserved. The blocks still function as apartments.
