Mine, Daily life

The miners’ blocks of flats were built in an area of Idrija town called Prejnuta. On the left side of the street, there is a building with two apartments. On the right side, next to the road, there is a building with 4 apartments. A building with 7 apartments is located off the street. On the right side, next to the road, there is a set of three blocks with 17 apartments in total. Most of the blocks are built in the hill and have an underground basement. All the blocks are single-storey and have a rectangular floor plan and a double-eaved roof. The façades were of simple design and partially replaced. The only decor are simple wall wreaths, which divide the floors and window frames, all made within the plaster. The original dimensions, roof inclines, distribution of facade openings and street equipment (staircase in front of the building entrance) are preserved. The aesthetically designed and functional architecture of the buildings, modelled by the workers’ district, represents the completed urban whole.

Idrija Mercury Mine

The blocks of flats are an example of preserved worker’s apartments, which were built by the Idrija Mercury Mine in the years 1872–1933, in order to improve the living standard of the miners. They were built in several stages. The first block was initially built for the family of a mining administrator. Later, it was rebuilt and it had 2 apartments for mining families. The three newer blocks had 17 apartments in total. On the right side of the street, they built two blocks with 7 and 8 apartments. They all had three spaces, of which the first part next to the hallway was the kitchen and a small room and the second part was a large room. Two kitchens were back to back because of the common chimney, which means that they were placed in the middle of the building. The water was brought in the apartments from the drinking fountain (“štirna”). Two families shared a toilet. Behind the block, there were wooden woodsheds (for firewood and breeding domestic animals) and a laundry, which was shared by all residents.

The miners’ blocks is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija mining heritage with exceptional universal values. The mining buildings in this part of Idrija, today have 24 apartments in total and most of them have the basement premises. In the context of the mining activity, the buildings are important witnesses of the life of the mining families throughout the history of the Mine and of the development of the residential culture of the working class. The blocks of flats represent a living monument to generations of Idrija miners, who co-shaped the mercury culture throughout the centuries, and today the heritage of all humanity.

The roofing and most of the windows were replaced. Some procedures were performed on the buildings’ facades. The installations were replaced inside some of the apartments.
