Original use
The block of flats is an example of preserved worker’s apartments, originally 16, which was built by the Idrija Mercury Mine in the years 1872–1933, in order to improve the living standard of the miners. They had a common lobby, a kitchen with a cooker (living area), one big and one small room with modest equipment. The toilet was shared by two and the bathroom by four families. The water was gathered from water well. The laundry facility near the block of flats was common for all the residents. Behind the block of flats, huts (for the firewood or breeding domestic animals) were located. The rent, similar to that for the miners’ houses, was the only liability of the tenants to the owner. Married miners were entitled to the apartments. Those with a longer period of service at the Mine and those with larger families had the advantages in being granted an apartment. In case of illness, retirement or death of a miner, his family had to move out of the apartment within three months.
Present use
The residential block is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. Today, the building has 14 apartments with basement premises. The apartments are connected with a hallway (shared). The private dental clinic is on the ground floor of the building (at the address Henrik Freyer 11). Inside the building, the apartments were partially modified and modernised. The obsolete windows were renovated. Roofing was replaced. In the context of the mining activity, the building is an important witness of the life of the mining families throughout the history of the Mine and of the development of the residential culture of the working class.
