Description

Short description
The two-storey building has a four-axial facade. An asymmetrical arrangement of the buildings’ axis is a consequence of subsequent modifications. The late Gothic gateway with trimmed edges and the year 1849 is preserved. It is built in the style of a typical Idrija Miner’s House with the uniform building structure (arrangement of windows 3-4-4) and steep double-eaved roof. The building’s interior is arranged into seven apartments.

Original use
After the building’s renovation, founded by the Mine, the Idrija Lacemaking School (founded in 1876) got its headquarters here in 1906. Initially, it operated in the ground and first floor, and after 1910 in the second floor, where there was also the School Support Committee. The school was the reason for the incredible development of lacemaking in the broader area and the recognition of Idrija Lace on the market. During World War I, its operation was disturbed, because the students, in addition to lace, also had to make clothing for the soldiers. The Mine and the Municipality were responsible for building maintenance. During World War II, the school was making the clothing for the soldiers only in the second floor, since German military units occupied the other floors. After the war, the building was briefly the headquarters of the Yugoslav National Militia.
Present use
The building of the Lacemaking School is being preserved, secured and presented as an important monument of Idrija mining heritage with exceptional universal values. Since the end of World War II, the facility has been a multi-apartment building and serves as citizens’ residence. The name of the building “the old lacemaking school” is being preserved, which shows how the town’s identity is preserved in the citizens’ consciousness.
