The one-storey Theresian building belongs among the oldest Baroque buildings in Slovenia. The monumentality of the building gives the recognisable image to the old town centre. It served for storing cereals and also other food intended for the miners’ supply. The external walls on St Achatius Square and on the St Barbara street are decorated with the characteristically rustic décor. They are connected with the arched underground hallway with a large opening on the ceiling, which served for cereals distribution. The plaques, installed on the façade of the Magazine, are dedicated to well-known persons of Idrija’s history, namely to Jožef Mrak, Mark Vincenc Lipold, Baltasar Hacquet, Franc Anton Steinberg, Ivanka Ferjančič and Henrik Freyer.

Idrija Mercury Mine

The building’s specifics were significantly associated the lifestyle of the miners and their families in the 18th and 19th centuries, therefore it was also named the Magazine or the cereal mine’s warehouse. Until 1912, the Mercury Mine paid the miners one part of their salary in goods, which were cereal.

The Magazine - Mine’s Warehouse is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. It is one of the most representative buildings in the old town centre. Through the underground passage, which served in the past for distributing food to the miners, is nowadays used as a pedestrian passage between the urban squares of the town in the North–South direction. Today, the Magazine has a completely different, especially cultural role. In it, there are the premises of the Idrija Public Library, the Art Gallery and the Idrija War Museum. The plaques, installed on the façade of the Magazine, which is facing towards St Achatius Square, are dedicated to well-known persons of Idrian history, namely to Jožef Mrak, Mark Vincenc Lipold, Baltasar Hacquet, Franc Anton Steinberg, Ivanka Ferjančič and Henrik Freyer.

After the adaptation and especially after the thorough reconstruction and the placements of activities, the building regained its usefulness. The building’s roof was renovated in 1998.
