Description

Short description
The centre of the old town centre is the Šelštev building, which, along with Achatius Square, forms the complete whole of the town centre. The surroundings of the old town centre also testify about the diversity of immovable heritage and about the rich mining tradition in Idrija. It presents the universal tradition and specific features of the life of the miners and their families. The mining image of the town of Idrija is also created by the typical miners’ houses and blocks of flats, as well as by the town architecture in the narrow part of the town. The most representative immovable heritage is represented by the theatre, the Magazine, the town square, the Town Hall, the Folk School, Gewerkenegg Castle, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Idrija Secondary School of Natural Sciences.

Original use
The development and the scope of the town centre were strongly connected with the underground growth of the mine. Originally, the central part of the town centre was represented by the Achatius’s shaft along with the town square. In times of conjuncture, new building were being built in the town, therefore the number of inhabitants was increasing. The image of the town centre was unplanned and adjusted to the natural configuration right up to the 20th century. The mining facilities and the devices were located in the central part of the town and the residential houses were located in the hilly surroundings. Important building were built in the 19th century: Folk School (1876), Town Hall (1898) and the first large miner’s block in “Prejnuta” (1872). The Idrija Secondary School of Natural Sciences was built in 1903. In 1952, the damaged Church of St Barbara in the central square was demolished. The miners’ blocks were built on larger scale in the 1950s and in the 1960s.
Present use
The old town centre is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. A significant part of the representative immovable heritage, including the Šelštev building and Achatius Square as the central part of the old town centre, has experienced a proper renovation in the last decade. This way, the old town centre maintained its rich mining tradition on the outside too. Therefore, the town centre maintains the status of a representative and unique place, in the UNESCO World Heritage perspective, and also in general. This way, everyone can still observe the traditions of the miners and their families, the development of the town in different time periods, as well as the generally rich cultural and technical tradition. In 2006, the central square was also renovated and nowadays serves mainly for socialising and public events.
