Mine, Development of new activities

The brick two-storey building with the entrance in the mine has a mansard at the top. The middle part of the ground floor is a highly arched lobby, which continues in the mine tunnel. The doors in the pit are on the back wall of the building. There are changing rooms with toilets and a souvenir shop on the left side and a lecture room or the projection room on the rights.

Idrija Mercury Mine

The Šelštev (originally wooden) is an entrance building through which they entered the mine. Šelštev (from German word “die Gesellstube”) means “comrade room”, “call room” or “collection facility”. The miners gathered in the call room before work. The guard called the miners to work by hammering the rail on top of the Šelstev entrance building. At 4 AM, in the call room, the manager read the miners by name to check their presence and announced them their daily work obligations from the book. Before entering the pit, the miners took their mark - identification number off a special board called the “Death Clock”, and returned it after the shift, which confirmed their safe return from the pit. In 1787, the hospital started to operate in the building, where an injured miner or miners poisoned with mercury were treated. After that, the mine surveyors got premises in the building. At the end of the 19th century the apartments in the building were intended for the migrant mining workers. In 1890, Stanko Bloudek, the professional aircraft and automotive design engineer and constructor, planner and builder of sports facilities, also lived in the building.

The building is being preserved, secured and presented as important mining heritage of Idrija with exceptional universal values. The Šelštev entrance building is one of the oldest preserved mining buildings, which, along with the Ahacij Square, forms the entire old town centre. The ground floor premises of the building are intended for the museum display. The model, which shows the location and the diversification of the Idrija mine, is built in the floor of the hallway. Further on, there is an entrance in to underground area. There are changing rooms with toilets and a souvenir shop on the left side. The call room on the right side, is nowadays in use as the lecture room, the projection room and visitors’ collection point before entering the pit. The first floor is intended for restaurant and the second floor with the mansard is intended for the accommodation.

- 1993–1994: the static reconstruction, drainage, hydro-isolation of the building and the facade were made. The roofing and shingle were replaced. The call room was reconstructed internally.
