Description
Short description
The sample is fundamentally breccia dolomite with cinnabar binder. Specimen is irregularly shaped and its breccia structure is nicely visible. Due to the amount of cinnabar, the sample is called rich ore. One side of the sample is limited with tectonic surface on which the tectonic slides (tectonic grooves) with cinnabar coating - crust are nicely visible.

Length 9 cm, width 8.5 cm, height 6.5 cm.

Triassic, Scythian layers, Induan, Lower Scythian dolomite.

Original use
The mineralisation in the described sample is epigenetic. In both phases of hydrothermal activity, in addition to stronger open delivery faults, several fractures, on which the hydrothermal solutions with mercury flowed in, were formed. In addition to the faults and fractures, cinnabar also filled several sedimentary pores in dolomite. Different breccias and fossils residues were very favourable for the formation of cinnabar impregnations. In our case, the dolomite breccia binder was almost entirely replaced with cinnabar.
Present use
The described specimen is being preserved, secured and presented as an important natural heritage of mining in Idrija with universal values. It is a part of the geological collection of Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija”. It can also be used for different types of mercury heritage promotions.

STATE OF CONSERVATION
History of conservation:
The specimen is appropriately preserved. The entire geological collection was professionally completed and placed in the renovated premises of the Idrija Municipal Museum in 1992. Therefore, no additional interventions are necessary. Security of the premises is taken care of.
