Description

Short description
The karoli ore sample is flat and its front surface is polished. The sample is poorly mineralised dolomite pyrite breccia with mud binder. The rock has a transitional character of pyrite breccia and dolomite mud breccia. Such poor epigenetic karoli ores occurred in the central level of the Karoli tectonic unit, where the hydrothermal activity was strongly spread and the rocks were less tectonically ruptured and poorly impregnated with cinnabar.
Measures
Length 15 cm, width 12 cm, height 4 cm.
Materials
Pyrite and dolomite gravel-stones, crystal of cinnabar.

Original use
The karoli ores are unique epigenetic ores of Idrija ore deposit. They were found only in the Karoli ore body, which is structurally the deepest part of Idrija ore deposit. This very special part of Idrija ore deposit is located within the Karoli tectonic unit. This area is also called “the Karoli structure”. The Karoli structure is limited by two very strong ore-bearing faults: Urbanovec – Zovčan and Karoli. The genesis of unusual ores in the Karoli structure is still not satisfactory explained.
Present use
The described Karoli ore is being preserved, secured and presented as important natural heritage of mining in Idrija with exceptional universal values. The specimen represents one of the natural features of Idrija ore deposit. It is a part of the geological collection of Idrija Municipal Museum. Visitors can view it within the permanent museum exhibition “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija”. It can also be used for different types of mercury heritage promotions.
