Short description
The anthracite sample (its old name is burning ore) is black, has a glassy sheen, black scratch and a shell-like fault. The base is anthracite. Cinnabar is found in fractures and capillaries. We can also find the mineralised shells of brachiopods and chalcedony cinnabar grains.

Original use
We presume, that the coal inserts in Skonca beds were relatively rare, therefore the mineralised coal is an extremely rare feature of the Idrija ore deposit. Anthracite appeared in middle and upper layers of Skonca beds in the form of inserts and in up to 40 cm thick lenses (“Turniš”). After 1970, the mineralised anthracite inclusions were found only in the “Turniš” ore body. Cinnabar mineralisation appears mainly in the form of veins and moulds of superficial layers, which indicates the epigenetic type of mineralisation.

Present use
The anthracite cinnabar ore is being preserved, secured and presented as important natural heritage of Idrija ore deposit with exceptional universal values. It represents a unique soil “archive”, as the sample was excavated in Idrija ore deposit and also stored. It is a part of the thematic collection “Epigenetic ore” of the Mine geological collection, displayed in the administrative premises of CUDHg, as a part of the Francis’ shaft. The described specimen is exhibited in a display case. It can be used for temporary exhibitions and for other types of mercury heritage promotions.
