Description
Short description
In the transected and polished sample, a fluid-slip texture can be observed. Steel ore intraclasts, plastically deformed lie in fluidly designed cinnabar gel with small content of cinnabar and large content of bitumen component. It is dark red with typical steel shine. Black, irregular inserts are from sapropelite.

Original use
Steel ore with intraclasts belongs among syngenetic ores in Skonca beds. These were formed in the second phase of mineralisation, when hydrothermal water, enriched with mercury and sulfur were flown into the wetlands. Hot water composition was changed depending on the situation in the deeper parts of the Earth. In some periods, cinnabar was excreted in large quantities in the form of gel particles, from which the extremely rich steel ores, so-called gel steel ores (up to 78% of Hg) were formed. Gel steel ores occurred in Skonca beds as lenses of different thicknesses. In some layers, the surface tilting caused short slips and formations of intraclastic (inclusions) steel ores with gel-cinnabar binder, which has fluid texture.
Present use
The steel ore with intraclasts is being preserved, secured and presented as important natural heritage of Idrija ore deposit with exceptional universal values. It represents a unique soil “archive”, as the sample was excavated in Idrija ore deposit and also stored. It is a part of the thematic collection “syngenetic ore” of the Mine Geological Collection, displayed in the administrative premises of CUDHg, as a part of the Francis’ shaft. The described specimen is exhibited in a display case. It can also be used for temporary exhibitions and for other types of mercury heritage promotions.
The sample is appropriately preserved. Additional interventions are not necessary. Security of the premises is taken care of.
