In the rock sample of typical grey colour we can observe numerous poorly preserved plant residues, which are black. The specimen represents special kaolinitic rocks, found only in the Idrija ore deposit and are a great specialty.

Original use
The kaolinitic rocks are the oldest Ladinian rocks in the Idrija ore deposit and are positioned in the foundation of all other Ladinian rocks. They were formed by decomposition of volcanic material (ash) in the acid wetland environment. They are usually up to 3 metres thick, but on some individual areas even up to 16 metres. Due to their high distribution in the ore deposit and specific conditions of the formation of kaolinite mineral Al2Si2O5(OH)4, these rocks are important for the reconstruction and interpretation of sedimentation conditions in the Mid-Triassic tectonic rift.
Present use
The kaolinite siltstone with plant residues is being preserved, secured and presented as important natural heritage of Idrija ore deposit with exceptional universal values. It represents a unique soil “archive”, as the sample was excavated in Idrija ore deposit and also stored. It also represents one of the natural features of the Idrija ore deposit. It is a part of the thematic collection “Rocks of Idrija ore deposit” of the Mine Geological Collection, displayed in the CUDHg administrative premises, as a part of the Francis’ shaft.
The sample is appropriately preserved. Additional interventions are not necessary. Security of the premises is taken care of.
Present state
good
Necessary activities:
Regular seasonal maintenance.
