Short description
The collection consists of 40 rock samples, representing structural and tectonic characteristics of Idrija ore deposit. The specimens of erosional contacts of both Mid-Triassic discordances, structural features and contacts of Triassic and tertiary faults are presented. Samples are of various forms and sizes, mostly naturally formed and some are also transected and polished.
Today’s extremely complex structure of the ore deposit is a result of the Mid-Triassic tectonic events and tertiary tectonics. Tectonic movement significantly mixed the rocks from different geological periods and created various complex joints between the rocks. Due to erosion in the area of the Mid-Triassic tectonic rift, around 750 metres of Anisian, Scythian, and Permian rocks are missing. In the area of strong tectonic processes in the time of the creation of the Alps, approximately 65–40 million years ago, breaking, corrugating and thrusting. In this period, tectonic forces were strongly corrugated and broke the ore deposit. Approximately 10 to 15 million years ago, stronger tectonic movements occurred. The faults in the last five million years, including the Idrija fault, have additionally broken Idrija territory and made the rock structure even more complex.
Present use
Idrija ore deposit rock samples with structural and tectonic characteristics are being preserved, secured and presented as important natural heritage of Idrija ore deposit with exceptional universal values. The collection wraps up the discoveries of several generations of geologists on the creation and development of the Idrija ore deposit, which has represented a special challenge for several researchers. It represents a unique soil “archive”, as all the displayed specimens were excavated in the Idrija ore deposit and also stored. The larger part of the collection is displayed and available to researchers in the CUDHg administrative premises within the Francis’ shaft. The described specimens are mostly presented in display cases. The rest of them are stored in the drawers under the display cases. Samples can also be used for temporary exhibitions and for other types of Mercury heritage promotions.
Original location
Rock samples are from different ore bodies from the I to the XIV level of the Idrija Mine.
The samples are appropriately preserved. Additional interventions are not necessary. Security of the premises is taken care of.
