"The Retamar castle is located in the old town of Almadén, at the highest point of the town. It was built in the 12th century in the era of Arab rule to defend the treasure that was the Almadén Mine, and was known as the Fortress of the Mine.
This medieval castle was part of an extensive network of fortifications that maintained a constant watch and defence."

The building formerly occupied a large area of the square and the surrounding houses, although the remains of the castle that have survived to this day are much smaller.

The castle is built with stone and limestone masonry, with ashlars mixed in between.

Defended the treasure of Almadén mine, was also known as “Hins-al-madin” or “Fortress of the Mine”.

After the last restoration works, the castle has a vantage point where we can get an interesting view of Almadén (lookout).

"It was refurbished and enlarged in 1467 by Clavero López de Padilla, who belonged to the Order of Calatrava.

In the 19th century, a part of the walls was restored and the square-shaped tower with the bell tower and the clock was built as well. After the last restoration works, the castle has a vantage point where we can get an interesting view of Almadén."
