Short description
"There is no data on the date of its construction as a chapel. Today it is a church. It is built on the outskirts of what was then the urban centre of Almadén.
It is known that while the town was inhabited by the Fuggers, a family of German bankers who were landlords of the Almadén mine, there was a chaplain who celebrated three weekly masses for the good success of the Royal Mine and Factory.
The mining establishment, as owner of the property, had the right to appoint the chaplain of the Prison for Forced Labourers and of this chapel each year.
During the 18th century, the brotherhood of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, founded in 1732, had its headquarters in this temple. When the priest and brother D. Juan Cayetano Zumajo died in 1756, he indicated that he was to be buried in what was then called the San Juan chapel. Being property of the Treasury, in order to bury him, permission had to be requested from the superintendent of the mine. For the same reason, the following year, the mortal remains of the first director of the mines, Carlos Koëller, were buried.
Today there are no traces of the bell tower and the clock. The exposed masonry and its stone doorway stand out on its façade. It has a small bell tower and, below it, a rose window in the space that was formerly occupied by a clock.
Inside there is a spiral staircase giving access to the choir. The upper part is topped by a curved semi-pediment, which in turn serves as a base for a small gazebo topped with a triangular pediment. On the main altar, the figures of Saint John the Baptist and Christ of the Miners stand out.
At the foot of the entrance stairs leading to the building, there is an access, known as the Torno de San Juan, a consequence of the extension of the mining work in the 18th century up to that point."
