Short description
"The furnaces that were used until the closure of the mercury metallurgy in Almadén are the Pacific furnaces of the multiple hearth type, doing continuous processing.
They began to be installed in 1952 and, including modifications, they are the latest generation of furnaces used in Almadén.
The furnace is circular, 9.5 metres high, and inside there are 8 levels through which the ore that enters from the upper part falls in a spiral during the roasting process.
The temperature on the first level is approximately 300° and the maximum temperature is seen on the 6th level, reaching 650–700°.
A solid residue called slag comes out of the furnace, as well as a gas that contains mercury and SO2.
These furnaces have a series of attached installations:
Preparation of ore for the furnaces.
Collection of solid residue.
Condensation of mercury.
Separation of mercury from the soot.
Recovery of the water used in the process.
