Description
Short description
"This shaft has existed since the beginning of the 18th century with the exploitation of the Castillo mine and was used for mineral extraction and input of materials.
Around 1803 it was deepened and at the beginning of the 20th century, it was equipped with a wooden headframe and a mineral extraction and drainage machine.
Since 1955, being located within the town, it was only used as a ventilation shaft. In 1966 it was deepened again down to the 19th floor, same as San Teodoro, so its current length is 500 metres. Because of its construction, the air has a natural tendency to come out through it, entering through the San Teodoro shaft, so that historically in summer, when the ventilation circuit was reversed, the mining activities stopped or at least slowed down.
It is a shaft 3 metres in diameter and a little over 485 metres deep, completely lined with concrete. The last deepening in 1966 and previous inspections revealed some cracks in the lining, probably as a result of the movements of the ground and certain deficiencies in the lining. On the surface, the mouth of the shaft is inside a vaulted chamber lined with masonry.
