Short description
"Mercury minerals in the comarca of Almadén appear in two types of rocks: quartzite and volcanic rocks.
The main mercury mineralisations were in the quartzite rocks and were part of a stratigraphic unit called the “Criadero quartzite”, which is a set of strata that were formed at the beginning of the Silurian period (about 435 million years ago).
Later, these rocks were impregnated with mercury resulting from hydrothermal activity related to a volcanic episode.
The mines in which mercury minerals have been extracted in volcanic rocks have been smaller, but were generally presented richer in mercury.
These three probe drilling samples show the stratigraphic columns of mineralised upper quartzite, mineralised lower quartzite and mineralisation in volcanic rocks."
