Short description
"These furnaces were introduced in Almadén in 1954 and were in operation until 2003. The furnaces are made in the United States. In America, fast treatment furnaces of the Herreshof type were used more and more, with the modifications inherent to this distillation, whereby around 100 tons per day were treated in these furnaces. This type of furnace is a continuous system that avoids losses of mercury vapour and contact of workers.
The process is divided into four phases:
1st – The mineral is crushed to the size of one inch and is introduced into the upper part of the furnace, performing a spiral movement during its descent.
2nd – The furnaces reach a temperature of 750° and use propane as fuel, which reduces the roasting time to less than two hours.
3rd – The mercury gases, after passing through a cyclone that eliminates the dust, reach the condensers, whereupon the mercury deposits in basins with water.
4th – The mercury is conducted through pipes from the furnaces to the storage room, where it is introduced into pools filled with water to prevent evaporation."
