"Prior to the Greco-Roman era, some authors hinted at the knowledge of mercury metallurgy and described different methods for transforming mercury, which indicates the existence of this activity; however, no material remains of those distillation systems are preserved to this day.
Pliny (1st century BC) describes the first mercury metallurgical procedure as follows:
""The ore is placed in fired clay pots or dishes and these, in turn, are placed inside an iron pot covered with a concave lid that is itself covered with clay. Below, the fire is started by a bellows, whereby a liquid with the color of silver and the fluidity of water gathers in the lid."""
