Short description
"The showcase is made up of three elements:
1. Image: Goldsmith’s workshop, use of quicksilver in cleaning gold and silver.
2. Explanation: During the Middle Ages, once the mines passed into Christian hands, the Knights of the Order of Calatrava were in charge of their administration.
In addition to medicinal uses, quicksilver would become closely related to medieval crafts, being used in leather tanning and goldsmithing, to clean gold, refine it, or recover it from fabrics.
Almadén quicksilver, distributed by Genoese merchants, was at this time common merchandise of the trade routes that went east or south across the Sahara.
