"The showcase is made up of three elements:
1. Image: Instruction of mine foremen at the Mining School
2. Explanation: During the 18th century, the Almadén mine, already in the hands of the Royal Treasury, benefited from the leadership of German specialist technicians who contributed to a substantial improvement in exploitation.
During the term of superintendent Villegas, the German technicians established the use of the compass in underground workings, implemented the so-called banks and front walls (testeros) system and began to strengthen the fortification of the interior of the mines with masonry and brick.
3. Facsimile reproduction of Don Enrique Cristóbal Storr’s appointment as director of these mines; original document, Spain, Ministry of Culture, National Historical Archive, Contemporary Fonds, Almadén Mines, 366.
Most of the extracted mercury still had the same destination as in previous centuries: the American silver mines. This large demand for quicksilver required an increase in the workforce, which was promoted with an ambitious population policy that, together with technical advances, promoted the progress of the mining establishment.
